PostSubject: Blood+ cosplay/sword?   Sun May 23, 2010 4:54 am

As some of you know I have been making my way through Blood+ series and totally have fallen in love with cosplaying saya. Im still unsure which out fit to make. I have plenty of options from the series and even from the orginial film. Either way tho I will still need to make her sword. Heres some ref pics
Warning- spoilers. Nothing major but how the sword looks later in the series. I know a few people on here have just started watching it and dont want to ruin anything for them lol.

First half of the series:

Second half of series. Saya's 'new' sword

I have never made a sword before so any help even on the basics would be awesome.

from where i stand, i'd say there are two option - wood or foam. remember that with a wooden sword, while it will fit a scabbard, many cons will ask you to check it in. foam, on the other hand is weapon safe and free to carry (unless you make a nuisence of yourself with it) but generally won't fit a slim scabbard. of the two, a thick grade foam, cut to the right shape in two pieces, with a fiberglass or rubber core would be your best bet, though i'm certainly no expert at making one (would actually be described as less than a novice by some). the advantages are its easy to carve, LARP safe, and can be fun

As you know I made the Auron sword mk.1 with foam and wilko's light metal mop handle ^^ And the second sword was made pretty much the same too Smile

Yours is wayyyyy slimmer though, so you wouldn't be able to use the mop handle as a core like me. For a sword like that I'd say use either a thin bit of sheet metal or plastic then add very thin foam either side of it to keep it looking very slim (you wouldn't get away with just the sheet metal or plastic at a con ofc). Using just foam without a core would mean it would be bendy and likely to 'flop' ><

Or you could just use cardboard I guess ><

ofc, there are other way of doing i'm sure, but this is the technique I'm familiar with Smile

ps. If you're after the scabbard too and want to use it....no idea apart from just buying a toy sword and modifing it >< I's probs just leave the scabbard

*cracks knuckles and taps reservoir of LARP knowledge*

As far as I know the best thing to use as a core is glassfibre or carbon fibre. Both are solid and light (however, can snap under the right conditions, but that's only through GROSS misuse) then most of the advice I've been given (never tested) is build up with some rubber foam, which you can then carve and cut down to the right size and shape (some of the big weapon makers for larp injection mould the foam, but carving is easier and likely cheaper) then you colour with latex and paint (avoiding metallic paints as they can make the latex degrade quicker iirc).

If that's gone right you should have something that you can blatt people about the head with (provided you're not silly and pull your blows) but avoid using it to thrust and don't leave it resting on the point of the blade, as this can force the core through the rubber etc, making it a much less safe item.

A scabbard can be custom made with some cardboard and cunningly applied decoration; papier mache, leatherette or whatever, so it looks like the scabbard you're wanting and fits around your weapon.

And thus is my two shillings.

Shazam.

Things what I fergotted.

Keep those kinds of things out of direct sunlight when storing them, as that will help all that lovely latex perish even quicker. And to keep them nice, smooth and not-sticky, spray them with silicone lubricant (available from most craft stores I believe, definitely from textiles shops as it's used to keep sewing machines lubed) and then wipe that down with a soft cloth or paper towels.

If they get wet, the best thing is to rub all the exposed latex with talc, this absorbs all the moisture, keeping the prop dry and hopefully preventing it from degrading faster.

for the quality stuff, shop online, i'm afraid to say, though some larger hobby stores might carry the glass fibre cores for specialist jobs. really, you need a LARP supplier. Try Darkblade, if they don't have the materials themselves, they will at least be able to point you in the right direction, and they have a great selection of ready made weapons that you can use for inspiration.

Skein Moore were a supplier that did workshops and would have been useful but I think they dissolved a few years back.

Was wondering if you're still doing this and how it's going?

Sounds cool, if you decide to do it, I think you'll work really well as her tbh Smile
That's why I posted, thought it would be a shame if you changed your mind
